Montgomery County Area MapThe area now known as Montgomery County was first inhabited by American Indian tribes, including the Powhatan and the Nanticoke. In 1776, Montgomery County was founded, and later, in 1791, portions of the county became part of the new District of Columbia. Today, Montgomery County is one of the most affluent counties in the United States, populated by a highly educated citizenry.

The average personal income for residents of the county was $43,073. About 3.3% of families and 4.6% of the population live below the poverty line, including 4.6% of those under age 18 and 4.6% of those age 65 or over.

Montgomery County Schools

With more than 137,000 students currently enrolled in Montgomery County schools for the 2007-2008 school year, the county educates more students than any other county in the state. Montgomery County schools boast a 91% graduation rate and an average SAT score of 1624. The county schools capital budget for the fiscal year 2009 is set at approximately $269 million.
